In the event of a power loss from a storm or other causes, particularly one that last for a prolonged period of time, having a home standby generator is not only convenient, it is also a major relief and peace of mind.
A home standby generator will keep you and your family warm and safe in an emergency situation, you will be able to carry on with you life without interruption.
The Benefits of Generators
Standby Generators are becoming increasingly more common in businesses and residential homes. A standby generator, though like a portable generator, provides uninterrupted electrical power for days when a power outage occurs. The generators are directly connected to the building’s power supply and operate automatically via a transfer switch.
Choosing a generator for you:
Choosing a home standby generator will depend on each individual need. Things to consider are what is considered important to you when there is a power outage. Common items include things such as fridge and heating, but more complicated items may also be on the list. However, some items may require permits, inspections, proper installation and may need an activation. An experienced electrician can help start the process of installing a home standby generator so that you are ready for the next power outage.
Types of Home Generators
There are two different types of generators found in homes in Alberta. They are both very useful in the even of an emergency power outage although they are different in a few different ways. A portable home generator is the one most people are familiar with. These are used for construction and camping, they can be plugged into a transfer switch and will be sufficient for a few hours. They can be dangerous if they are left in a carport or covered area because they emit carbon monoxide exhaust.
The second type of generator is known as a standby generator. They are a permanent installation and are integrated into the homes electrical system. The generator works with an automatic transfer switch that will detect a power outage as it is happening and automatically starts up the generator, it then switches the power over to the generator from your utility’s power so you are not interrupted.
